I'm beginning to wonder if Rice has always been this bad and my memory has been kind to her. The more likely explanation is that she's just past her prime for plotting a tale.
I liked that you never quite knew where the story would take you, from one section to the next. Too many stories are way too predictable and this was quite refreshing.
If you're interested in this just for the Cecil story, that only accounts for 10-15% of this book. That aside, this is a very informative account of the conversation struggle from a man right in the middle of it all.
Middle books have a tendency to be not very good. They often fall into the placekeeper trap and don't move much along. This book managed to avoid that and had a good story all on its own.
