Review: Lockdown

Lockdown Lockdown by Laurie R. King
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

After 50 pages I determined this book wasn't for me and moved on.

Review: Gork, the Teenage Dragon

Gork, the Teenage Dragon Gork, the Teenage Dragon by Gabe Hudson
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Well my only problem with this book is that I kept reading Gork's name as Grok for some reason. But that's my problem, not the book's. This was a fun, unique, and well placed story. I thought this would be an enjoyable read and am so glad i was not wrong.

Review: Beautiful Animals

Beautiful Animals Beautiful Animals by Lawrence Osborne
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

The narrative was good and the characters were well formed and pretty interesting but despite the conflicts going on there just wasn't enough tension to keep the story compelling. There is not much mystery at all and it's difficult to feel any sympathy for the characters. I thought this would be better.

Goodbye, Vitamin Goodbye, Vitamin by Rachel Khong
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Sad, but lovely. I enjoyed all the trivia but not sure if it can be believed, it is a novel after all.

Review: ME: A Novel

ME: A Novel ME: A Novel by Tomoyuki Hoshino
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

What the.......????

Just as soon as I was feeling I had a handle on this story, it would slip away. Ultimately, it's a simple idea but told in a distractingly complicated manner. Not sure if I liked this book or not.

Review: The Elegance of the Hedgehog

The Elegance of the Hedgehog The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wow. What a wonderful little story. I think I may have identified with the concierge quite a bit, that may have contributed to my enjoyment. I am going to have to buy a copy of this book to add to my collection. I'm also looking forward to reading the other works by this author.

Review: Thinspired: My Plan for Lasting Weight Loss and Self Acceptance

Thinspired: My Plan for Lasting Weight Loss and Self Acceptance Thinspired: My Plan for Lasting Weight Loss and Self Acceptance by Mara Schiavocampo
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I didn't find this particularly helpful, even though it was well written. I think this book would be useful for people who are just starting out in trying to make some changes. For those of us who have been at it for a while, there isn't really anything new to learn here.

Review: Ham on Rye

Ham on Rye Ham on Rye by Charles Bukowski
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

My first foray into Bukowski, not counting the movie Barfly. I'm glad I finally got around to this. Definitely one of the best and most interesting coming of age stories.

Too short and not enough detail to be inspirational but there are some recipes I might try.

Review: Artemis

Artemis Artemis by Andy Weir
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was so excited when I saw review copies were available for this book. I really loved The Martian. The movie was good but the book was just wonderful. So, I have to admit, my expectations for this one were very high. Honestly, the story wasn't as good but it was still fun and compelling enough that I didn't want to put it down. I will probably be buying a copy to add to my collection.

Review: In the Sanctuary of Outcasts: A Memoir

In the Sanctuary of Outcasts: A Memoir In the Sanctuary of Outcasts: A Memoir by Neil W. White III
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

This book had so much potential. I felt the author spent way too much time focusing on himself when the patients at Carville were the more interesting subject matter. He just came across as very self-interested. There would be hints of hope that he was going to turn a corner then he'd start talking about something dumb he'd done again.

Review: Strange the Dreamer

Strange the Dreamer Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor

I'm happy to see Ms. Taylor did not let her imagination take a rest after she finished her last series. Really looking forward to seeing where this goes.
