Review: Three Dark Crowns

Three Dark Crowns Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I thought I had read somewhere that this was a good book for Game of Thrones withdrawal. I don't feel that is a very apt description but I enjoyed it anyway. As a YA book, it was a quick, enjoyable read and was a welcome break from some of the more heavy stuff I've read recently. I'm looking forward to reading book 2.

Review: The Lesser Bohemians

The Lesser Bohemians The Lesser Bohemians by Eimear McBride
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Not a fan of disjointed narrative like this. It's not quite stream of consciousness, more like reading a redacted document where the redacted bits are just excised instead of blacked out.

Review: Shockaholic

Shockaholic Shockaholic by Carrie Fisher
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Her stories tend to ramble and they are pretty random but she sure could spin a good yarn.

Review: Swann's Way

Swann's Way Swann's Way by Marcel Proust
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Don't read this book if run-on sentences drive you nuts. I got the free public domain kindle version of this book. As always seems to be the case with these editions, there were a lot of spelling errors but you could usually figure out what was meant. It's just a very annoying issue.
This book exhausted me. I'm not sure I'll ever be ambitious enough to read the remaining volumes.

I was a bit worried this would be a bit dry for me but it was really interesting and a great read. I do disagree that D. H. Lawrence belonged in this group though. I don't feel like his work during this year stacked up to what the others accomplished.

Review: White Fur

White Fur White Fur by Jardine Libaire
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

It doesn't always work for me when you get a teaser of the end at the beginning of the book but it really grabbed me this time. The main story was interesting enough that I had a hard time putting it down and then I would remember the beginning and just couldn't wait to see how it got to that point and find out what would happen. I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy this book but it was really well-written and just a great story all around.

Review: Neuromancer

Neuromancer Neuromancer by William Gibson
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I now see how the script for The Matrix was born.

I honestly found this a bit hard to follow. Not very interested in reading the subsequent books.

Review: Night Thoughts

Night Thoughts Night Thoughts by Wallace Shawn
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Very thoughtful. Reads like a journal. I'm curious about his other books now. Sounds like a man who would be a lot of fun to chat with over a good meal.

Review: Crocodile on the Sandbank

Crocodile on the Sandbank Crocodile on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peters
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I really enjoyed this. It was exactly my cup of tea. I now see where Gail Carriger got the inspiration for her Soulless series. Can't wait to read the rest of these and may have to buy them for my collection.

Review: Tornado Weather

Tornado Weather Tornado Weather by Deborah Elaine Kennedy
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Interesting book. I was on board until the last chapter. It just didn't seem to fit and felt like too much of a turn on the narrative at the last minute.
